Nik Muffins is a initiative that has been started by graduates and it is aimed at addressing issues that affect girls in and around high schools. The initiative aims at providing the girls with soft skills at a competency level to prepare them for the entrance in higher education. As well as address low pass rates in high school, particularly in the areas of Mathematics, English, Accounting and Science.
What skills and resources were you able to draw from the community for this project?
Nik Muffins have been able to use the schools facilities to host their events. They have relied on the expertise of volunteers to assist as mentors and with tutoring. Through their business they have moved from baking goods at home to finding facilities in the city.
The challenges
The graduates have adopted a group of girls from their former high schools to mentor and tutor them. Lessons on various subject groups are held and advise is offered on university choices and applications, along with teaching the girls soft skills. The group they mentor offers a support community for the young ladies to encourage one another to do better and own their future.
