Refilwe Xaba

My project speaks about child abuse and highlights the negative influence that it has on one's self- acceptance, self-love and self-esteem. This ultimately makes it challenging for children to position and find themselves in society. These children are more susceptible peer pressure and often become people-pleasers as they seek validation and affirmation in the wrong places. The main and only character in the story is myself.

What skills and resources were you able to draw from the community for this project?

The digital storytelling process taught me how to structure and develop a story in a way that is focused and impactful. The process of story circle is one that I believe I will be using in my interactions with community members regarding women and children abuse.

The challenges

My story aims to highlight the abuse that is faced by children. The story focuses on my life journey thus far and the negative impact that abuse had on my development during my primary and high school careers. However, the story has a positive ending and highlights the importance of taking control of how you react to life's circumstances. We do not choose what happens to us in life, but we definitely have the responsibility and ability to take control of how we react to these external influences. I felt that I needed to tell my story because many of the socio-economic issues that we are facing stem from the brokenness that is found in our communities. Abuse is one of the main culprits for the brokenness that we see in our communities, which have unfortunately become a norm. I believe that a healthy (mentally, physically and emotionally) and sober-minded child will grow up to be come a socially responsible adult.

Addressing the challenges

My story was more focused on raising awareness as it entailed me sharing my personal journey with the larger community. I do intend on working closely with a women and children safety shelter in Bloemfontein in the near future.

The achievements

I am proud that I was able to share my story with the larger community. I believe that there are people who will be able to relate with my story and learn find encouragement it.
