Ladybird

A provider of arts tuition (music, art, drama) in a non-formal context.

What skills and resources were you able to draw from the community for this project?

Working with some exceptionally talented learners are a major asset. Some arts tutors working at Ladybird are from the community and sharing their skills and expertise in many enriching ways to the learners.

The challenges

Through offering excellent tuition of the arts to children and adults from the age of 4 years and older. Going to schools in the community, or inviting them into our concert hall, by offering annual performances to prep school children, in a Sheba u Mamela/Look and Listen, fun and informal manner at no cost. The various instruments of the orchestra are explained, shown and played or workshops on beat and rhythm are offered as part of these outreach concerts. The Academy does one public artwork per annum in the community and offers an interdenominational Christmas production in one of the churches every year. Local performers are invited to perform. We receive various national and international performers on a regular basis and offer these concerts to the community to attend.

Addressing the challenges

To fill a gap in the market for individual arts tuition (music, art, drama) in a rural area in South Africa. To create an opportunity for children and adults from a small community to endorse in studying one of the above arts.

The achievements

Delivered learners for tertiary education in the arts, as well as the industry. Endorsed in enriching many learners of the various formal school in and around Ladybird with the Sheba u Mamela/Look and Listen outreach concerts.
